baby 101.

recently a few friends are expecting. (YAY!) and they have been asking me much about everything baby-relating. from pregnancy symptoms to diaper cream. so i am going to write down here what i am frequently asked so that next time when other people ask i have notes to refer to.

starting with the most important... THE GYNAECOLOGIST.

if you are a stalker of mine, you might realised i had two other gynaes before finally finding another whom delivered the little girl. there are two who i absolutely love - dr cordelia han (raffles) and dr kenneth e lee (mt alvernia).

dr han was my first gynae. she was firm but nice. as it was our first baby, dr han gave us very valuable tips on pregnancy. she did not say that i should restrict my diet (of course raw foods are a big no no) but she wanted me to be aware of what i put in my mouth. it helps. she wanted to me to be eating more protein than carbs. she even draw out a whole day food plan for me!

read this for why you need protein & the benefits.

she always catches me not doing the right thing - not eating enough fruits or not drinking enough water or going out on empty stomach.

the problem we had sadly with her was cost. so we ask for referral and we ended up in KKH which was disastrous. the processes are slow, nurses are not really efficient and the wait are ridiculously long. the cost which was our concern was also not put to rest. so after the awful amniocentesis, we found dr lee and the end of all worries. i have no comments on the gynae in KKH. after always having to wait so long to see her, no mood for anything else...

dr lee is friendly, funny and very accommodative to our requests as long it is allowable. his fees are reasonable. though his diet plans for me are less strict (no raw and all other in moderation), on the day i delivered, he checked on me every two hours and gave updates. and when i was in the hospital after delivery, he comes everyday at 7-8ish in the morning like clockwork. all the nurses seem to have nothing else to say about him except good praises. hahaha.

up next... diapers!

these are the second important! i know milk is important too.. but since the little girl has only had taken breastmilk and enfamil i do not think i know enough to comment what is good or not. but anyways, the formula was introduce by dr lee and all the other mothers also tell me its good milk. ok, so back to diaper..

i love merries and mamy poko. i absolutely hate the old drypers. i bought them on numerous occasions because it was on offer - 14cents per piece. merries and mamy poko are twice that price but i usually get them when they are on offer...

diapers by the carton.

because buggy was on the breastmilk diet, her poo was watery most of the time. and when i was using the last pack of drypers, every time she poos, we have to wash her, her clothes and whatever she was on or in! IT LEAKS BIG TIME! from the sides, from the top, everywhere! messy and disgusting. the money i saved on the diapers are not even enough to cover the cost of detergent, water&electricity bills and the effort! but that was the old one. may be the new one is better but i still do not have the courage to try.. lol.. huggies are also slow in absorbing the wet poo especially when she poos really much.. it leaks too but less frequency then the old drypers. we never have leaky poo with merries and mamy poko, so i love them the most!

relating to diapers are wet wipes and diaper cream.

for wet wipes, the hubs and i like the watson's baby wipes the most. its wet and the sheets are big and smell very very very nice!

her grandma likes the huggies ones but the hubs finds them a little small when compared to the watsons's ones.

we started with pigeon ones which were also not bad but they dry up a little too fast. so when the wipes are left with a quarter, they are usually quite dry already even when in the box.

for diaper cream, we previously used desitin but it was too dry to spread. so we end up using too much and causing her butt to peel.. eeeks!

but of cus it really works and keeps the butt dry.

we then found another brand of cream which came in one of the freebie pack - mustela. its much wetter and just a little can spread on her whole butt..

we have been using this tube for five months plus and it still have a lot of left. compared to the desitin (top) tube, its almost finished even before two months.

on the topic of cream, we use this all purpose lucas pawpaw ointment.

its for diaper rash also, bites, cuts, burns.
we usually just keep one in the bag and bring it everywhere she goes.
i did not believe in its effectiveness until i tried it.
when i had mosquitoes bites, its take much shorter time to heal when i use the cream. cuts also take shorter time to dry too! now that i am writing these, it seem that i have more use of the cream then her.. hehehe..
i think this works like our zambuk but pawpaw does not have the spicy feeling when applied so i feel safer to apply on a young infant like her. =)

second last, milk bottles.

we use tommee tippee's cus it was promoted for its nipple like teats. to lessen confusion for the babies. though i believe that my baby is smarter than that (hahaha) but really she does not have any problem with either. =)

i also like the shape of the bottles. its fatter and easy for her little hands to hold.

lastly, breast pumps.

though i preferably likes medela's freestyle pump but i guess any double pump is all right.

the first one i had was a single pump. boy, it was messy. do you know that when one side is being pump, the other side leaks!? hahahaha.. and also double pumps are more efficient for obvious reasons. with a double pump, in 20mins you are done. with a single pump you take twice as much time so alot of precious time which could be spend resting or playing with the baby is spend pumping milk like a cow...

ok, thats all i have now. will add to the list later.. =)
anyway, we be going away this weekend. it will be baby's first holiday and plane ride. so mummy (me) is busy doing homework and packing!

inspirations & failed attempts.

this post is inspired by the dodo.

***

she send me these the other day...

this was her inspiration photo
and she tried to take a similar photo of her buggy..

and it ended up like this:

and like this!

hahaha.. but i think it failed cus buggy is placed on her tummy instead of her back.. anyway this post has nothing to do with buggy. its my cooking!

i tried to cook a few dishes for the family on saturday. i went online and search for a few simple recipes. i wanted to cook pasta because i think it's the easiest but was sick of my usual one.

so i found this...

the inspiration - lemon pasta with chicken.

and the fail attempt.
but the chicken is really nice i think.. hehehe..
recipe here.

and i was thinking that we should have some starters too! cream of mushroom is my favourite but was too time consuming.. so i choose a potato salad. thinking that it would be more time saving since i was already going to make potato purée for the little girl's dinner. but i was wrong. cus the little girl's potato was to be boiled in plain water while ours needed salt!

the inspiration - egg potato salad.

and the failed attempt.
the potatoes were overcooked on the outside and became marshy. =(
i skipped the peas and added onions.
recipe here.

i was ambitious and wanted a side - chicken wings!

the inspiration - spicy chicken wings.

and the failed attempt.
mine did not turned out char like expected.
and though the receipe say to refrigerate for at least one hour, but i dont think its enough.
i massaged them and left them inside for one and a half but the seasoning has just started to soaked in so the bigger wings are bland on the inside.
recipe here.

i think i had fun trying out new recipes and they dont really taste that bad, just dont look as nice.. =)
looking forward to the oven at my new place and i can bake more food!

oh, and i said tried cus my finger got cut when the onion decided to give a run. so the hubs stood in and the dishes are mostly finished up by him.

le hubs: why i end up cooking huh!?
me: cus my finger broken (exaggerating much here).. so if you dont want my finger to break and you end up cooking then you dont let me cook the next time..

*after a long paused..

le hubs: then who cook?!

so i have started to be concern with how to discipline a child. the little girl have started to show more defiance each day. if you think your below six months old is naughty, wait till he/she is half a years old.

when the little girl was three months old going four, she started to refuse milk and just want to play. she would flip the bottle away and hence resulting milk sprayed in all directions. we would tell her firmly that that is not right, if she do not want any more milk, she can just push the bottle teat to the side of her mouth. she understood. but there were just times she still prefer to flip the bottle away forcefully and once i hit her on her thighs to let her know that it is wrong. she cried terribly pitiful that day but since that day, no more sprayed milk.

i do know she understands what she is being told. because she can do the right thing she was being ask to and when she does the thing she is not suppose to - she paused and look at me. maybe she likes the word 'no'. -_-"

i know she is only six months old but i am not crazy.

nowadays, she would immediately want to be prop up after she finish her milk. she would struggle and pull whatever her fist can find just to get herself up. for days now, i have tried to tell her that she would need to clean her mouth first and i would help her up after she is cleaned. the first few days, she would not even listen to me or be bother with what i was doing. she just wanted to get up. i did not care either and just clean her mouth while telling her its going to be done real quick. but just starting yesterday afternoon, she looked at me after she was done with the bottle, gave me a millisecond to clean her mouth and struggled less when her mouth is being wiped. though this morning, she seem to forget but when i told her that her mouth needs to be clean first, SHE PAUSED! #proudmummy

hence, i believe that she do understand.

but lately, her "naughty" is not just simple refusing of milk. =( its more complicated, not sure if you know what i mean. she would throw her toys even when she was told not to. she would not stay still while getting dressed. she would not let us bathe her. she does not want sit in her car seat. she wants me to walk around on the train. sounding like a brat already? oh and lately, she only wants to drink warmed water. yes, room temperature water have to be warm up before she would take it. #raisingabrat

i do not think its her gums. she likes her apples cold.

as much as her wants are getting complicated so does her cries. last time, her cries are only hungry and sleep. now they also meant that she wants something - to be played with, to be held, to be snuggled, to eat apples, etc.

its getting more difficult to understand her lately. i do not want to exasperate her and i really wish to know when is she really being naughty and when is she really have a hard time. i like her to trust me. we have been all right with the trust system until her wants got more complicated. we have being introducing signs to her but since her motor skills are still developing, communication is mostly one way direction. after more than a week signing "milk", she finally seems to understand and smiles.

i have been also watching suppernanny on youtube. =)
used to watch them on the starhub box and i think its a good time to get my memory refresh. =)

stay in bed technique
1. say goodnight and tuck child in bed.

(child comes out of bed 1st time)

2. say goodnight, put child back into bed.

(child comes out of bed 2nd time)

3. say bedtime, and tuck child in.

(child comes out of bed 3rd time)

4. say nothing, put child back in bed. (repeat this step till the child sleeps.. "consistency" lol.)

anyway TGIF everyone!
i think i am really a mom now. i really do not look forward to the weekends and i love mondays. fridays have become black and TGIM! hahaha

#throwbackthursday on instagram.

as i am now worrying about how the girl's next vaccination would go next week, there is a little girl out there going for a brain surgery in a few hours. i feel so shallow.

she just turned one last month and yet this is not her first brain surgery. from her photos, she is so full of smiles and according to her mommy, snuggles too. her name is colbey raye smith.

i have been following their instagram for awhile now. i started following them starting from the nap photo contest of pet cuddles. i dont like cats. but maybe because i have a little girl too and so i click the button that day.

reading all about her and looking at her photos just makes me want to be a stronger person for my child. here i am whining about my baby not growing big enough or doesnt like pillows, i cant imagine what her family are going through right now. even cries of discomfort or a prick of needle on my little girl already make my heart break into a million pieces, how can anyone survive watching their little one having seizures and brain surgeries!?

but we all do know that we have a God that watches over us. He has his plans for us and no matter what that comes our way, we just have to trust Him that He knows whats best for us and He will never leave us.

Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. - Deuteronomy 31:6

will be praying much for them. pray that everything will go according in His plan. acceptance of all outcome (i learnt to pray for this from pih when i was much younger. that when we are praying for results and the outcome is not what we want, we should be reminded that God has a plan and He is in control). and no matter what happens, that the family would still keep their faith and trust in Him cus it is so hard to trust when we do not see the end of the road.

send them a prayer today if you are reading this. say a prayer for yourself too thanking Him for all He has provided.

six months.

MY GIRL IS HALF A YEARS OLD ALREADY!! how can that be? i thought i just brought her home yesterday from the hospital. i think i will still be saying this as long as i live.. hahaha..

so.. for record purpose, she weighs 7.8kg and is 68cm tall. not so much increase this time round but at least she grew.. right? but she has dropped to the 75percentile. o.O #stressmuch

we have been feeding her but, sadly, it just seem that she is not gaining as much as she is fed. she can have 5 times of 180ml milk and 2 times of 60ml cereal but still not showing any improvement in weight gain. =(

got to check with the doctor the next time.

anyway, so she have 2 teeth now and they bite! hahaha.. and so we got her her first toothbrush!

little girl brushing her teeth!
nah, she just puts everything in her mouth nowadays.. hahaha..

we also got her teething biscuits.

eating it #likeaboss
hahaha.

my sweet litte girl wants to share it with me!

suddenly she is not enjoying her biscuit anymore?
hahaha.. i think she just have too much expressions.

she can also sit up unsupported already!

this is one of the first few times she sat on her own.
check out her muffin top! how can anyone with that weighs only in the 75percentile?

we have also officially started her on solids at 5.5mths. she kept waking up early during naps, crying and hungry. and at night she also kept waking up in the wee hours for milk. =( so we decided to start her early anyway she seems to be ready for it. we started with a very thin gruel of cereal in her milk for the first two weeks when she turned 5mths then slowly thickening it and added a cereal feed a day and then to twice a day. and now she sleeps through the nights again!

#mylittlechamp
i think she looks very much like her dad here. dont you all think? =)

she started to crawl too but not too well yet. at least she stops going backwards or just in circles. hahaha. no photo of that. maybe will post a video at her seven months old post. =)

she can also now flip both sides. she used to be only able to flip to her left on her back. now she can flip to the right too!

she is also talking or babbling really a lot a lot! she started to make the m sound! so maybe i can hear her calling me "mom" soon! #excited

all right.. enough of the milestone stuff... this month, the little girl had a few events lining up for her too!

we bought her for a swim again. but this time round she did not enjoy it as much as her first.

her dad trying to coax her into the waters.

but i guess the water is too cold for her and she clung onto him like that most of the time.

distracted from the cold water awhile with her new ikea toy.

fast asleep after 30mins of water play.
oh well, i think we will just try again next time.

she also attended two birthday celebrations this month. =)

all ready for sweet little nat's first birthday!
and also her cousin zt's 3rd birthday!

favourite photo of the month would have to be this:

hahaha!
we wanted to make her look funny but instead it turn out to be pretty except for the little moustache. hehehe. its not that east to draw we realise cus its so ticklish and she keeps moving! oh well, we shall try it again some time. =)

my baby girl is really growing up too fast. going back to work in june and i will definitely miss being one of the first discovering her achieving her milestones and these fun times too! the only consolation is probably i will be "richer" when i work and we could go for fun holidays together!

keep growing, baby girl!

we dont do mondays.

usually after an eventful weekend, our mondays are mostly spent lazing around the house. and maybe because it was the mother's day weekend so the little girl seem to be sleeping exceptionally more than normal.

she was woken up at around 8 this morning by sounds her daddy made getting dressed for work. since she was up, i fed her her milk.

her grandma later bathe her and took her first nap at around 9.

she woke up at almost 11.

happy baby after her nap. =)

and started rubbing her eyes at 11.30? #reallysotired

i quickly made lunch for her and gave her milk. i let her lie in between two pillows (her favourite sleep position currently) and she was fast asleep around 1230 after playing with her monkey.

i took my lunch and posted photos of the weekend on the facebook.

DIGRESSION COMING UP!!

a few favourite photos to sum up our weekend..

on saturday, my aunties & mummy brought their mother, my grandma, out to her favourite restaurant to celebrate mother's day!

curiously looking at her 老姨丈.

family photo with everybody =)

family photo with grandma!

on sunday, the hubs family celebrated little zt birthday and mothers' day at ichiban boshi =)

my drooly baby in her high chair.

her latest obssession - menus!
hahaha.

boss ansel!

this face...

happy birthday little one!

=)

END OF DIGRESSION.
lol

she woke up around 2 and hang out with her dodo yiyi.

she got hungry at around 330 and so i gave her her bottle. gave her 7oz cus she sounds so hungry but she only drank her usual 6oz and promptly fell asleep when i put her in between the pillows! this is the first time she fell asleep without a fuss on a bed. so her mummy took nap with her and we both woke up around 630. hehehe..

mummy prepared her dinner and i went to prepare to go out to meet her daddy for dinner.

and this is how she looked #b4ileavethehousetoday
she was having her dinner and noticed how big her "bib" is. it was cus she is having dinner in her pjs and it was to prevent her from dirtying them. hahaha!

10 mins after i left my house, grandma whatsapp me that she finished her dinner already! we accidentally made too much dinner for her tonight. her usual is only 60ml of cereal but we made 90ml and she finished all! my good little girl. =)

while i was still having my dinner at nakhon kitchen (if you stalked me enough, you might realised that this is the third time there this month. hahaha. so i dont bother to take photos), mummy whatsapp me around 1010 saying that the little girl is fast asleep! sleep again?!

i reached home at around 11 to this...

fast asleep in between the pillows.
this is so therapeutic.

in summary, in her almost 14 hours of "awake time", six hours was spent sleeping! hahaha.
i enjoyed my monday today. how was your monday?
in fact, i have been having no monday blues for such a long time in am not looking forward to work.. =(

Saturday, May 10, 2014

my first mummy's day.

with the little girl at dinner.

honestly, i dont feel much difference today.
i woke up. made milk for the little girl. she slept so i played game. she woke up and i made bath water for her. she slept. she woke up and i made lunch for her. played with her. gave her milk after and she went to sleep again. she woke up again and we dressed her and took her out. she had a meltdown at the mall and fell asleep. we had dinner and came home. in short, this was just like any other day. i simply grew older by a day and with the dinner, maybe a wider waist.

i did not feel like a supermom or anyone great (but i do feel that my mom is great). i just am a mom to a sweet, super active little girl.

but i know i am blessed to be able to celebrate this day. everyday spent with her is.

so dear little one, please grow up healthy and strong, so that i can celebrate this day with you every year as long as i live. i love you so so so much. looking forward to the next one with you ♥

sweet potato with rice cereal.

made something special for the little girl tonight.

1. wash and steam a sweet potato till soft.
2. then make about 60ml of rice cereal.
3. remove the skin of the sweet potato
4. mix them both together using a sieve to remove the fibres
5. serve!

but i think i like the purée more than the little girl..

just 103 days apart...
feeling happy about myself suddenly.. =)
